Student Nomination Stories
Nominated by: Kaylee OBrien
If there was one singular word to describe Mrs. Giesting, it would be perfect. She is able to do the impossible, make learning fun while still being able to teach us so much about ELA. She meets every student where they are and treats every single one equally, guiding them through their highs and lows. When I first met Mrs. Giesting, it was at the middle school open house a few days before the beginning of 6th grade. I had a pretty bad 5th grade experience, and was dreading middle school so much, I was planning on hiding under my bed so I didn't have to go to school. But Mrs. Giesting changed that. She was the last teacher I met when I walked into the middle school hallway, but the first to make an impeccable impression on me. She was the only teacher who greeted me like she was actually happy to see me. Like the reason she was teaching was for the kids. Mrs. Giesting is the perfect mix of fun and logic, and she knows how to put exciting activities into everything she does. One example, is reading. I finish books in days, and I've read every single book in her personal library. Because of that, she takes time out of her personal schedule to write me a book list of books I should read, what they're about, and what she thinks of them. She truly cares about me, and that is something that I will value forever. Whenever I don ´ t want to go to school for some reason, my mom has one solo argument; ¨ You're going to miss Mrs. Giestings class if you don´t go.¨ And you want to know a secret? It works every single time. Another example of Mrs. Giesting working her magic is my best friend. Before 6th grade, She hated ELA. But now, towards the end of the year, She is at the top of the class, and recognized in GT for ELA. Mrs. Giesting has helped her see how powerful she is. impossible? more like Im possible. And boom. Another life changed by Mrs. Giesting. She also is the only teacher I feel like I can truly be myself around. When I finish my work early, she sits down with me and we spend the rest of the time talking about my life and catching up. She is one of those people in my life who I can trust all the time, no matter the circumstance. She is also hilarious. She always knows exactly what to say and how to act even when no one else does. She says the funniest things, and cares about you in a way that makes you want to be in her class all the time. She even makes boring things like amplify fun. I know all the other teachers who are being nominated have made incredible impacts on individual students lives, but Mrs. Giesting is different. She makes an incredible impact on everyone's life. She is the reason I want to be a teacher, and I am forever going to be inspired by her work with students in and out of the classroom. Even students who hate school enjoy it because of her. I remember one specific example of the week before thanksgiving. She noticed how antsy we were getting and how hard we had been working for the past month. And then, she decided to take out the lesson plan for that day, and turn it into something fun. We got to trace our hands and make a turkey, then decorate it and dress it up however we wanted. (I made a gnome turkey) Things like this show how amazing of a teacher she is. She is able to bring out the little kid´s in us while still making us feel like we´re important and worthy of all of the praise we receive. Sheś the type of teacher who can be funny in such a way that doesn´t stir up nasty looks from the ¨cool kids.¨ Everyone appreciates her for what she does, even the people who don´t have her for any subject, and that´s important. If you only see a teacher through interactions in a hallway, then the ones who are nice and engaging even if they don ´ t know you stick out. And that's what kind of teacher Mrs. Giesting is. I ´ m always interested in hearing what she has to say about a topic, no matter what it ´ s about, because I know how smart she is, and I trust her logic. Another thing? She doesn't have favorites! Unlike some teachers, she loves all of her beloved students equally, and that equal amount is a lot. She doesn't care about what we look like, who our family is, or what we believe, all she cares about is who we are as a person. And if who we are isn't as good as it can possibly be? Well she does her best to make us the best versions of ourselves we can be. With Mrs. Giesting, there's no impossible, or I can ´ ts. You can't spell impossible without possible, and Mrs. Giesting has helped me see that. I would never be who I am today if Mrs. Giesting wasn't a part of my life. And trust me, If you knew her too you would say the same without even the slightest hesitation.
